CyrusOne to build Austin data center at MetCenter park

The Austin American Statesman – April 2, 2009

What: CyrusOne has signed a long-term lease to build a 50,000-square-foot data center in Austin.

Where: MetCenter business park, at the intersection of Texas 71 and U.S. 183, near Austin-Bergstrom International Airport.

Who: Keith Zimmerman of UGL Equis and Brant Bernet of RackHouse represented CyrusOne. Zydeco Development is the developer of the MetCenter. CyrusOne has secured two anchor clients that it declined to identify but says are in the energy industry.

When: CyrusOne will provide business continuity and disaster recovery services starting in May. Full data center space is expected to come online in the third quarter of this year.

Details: Houston-based CyrusOne operates data centers around the country. Data centers typically don't involve many jobs but are valued sources of business personal property tax revenue because they house millions of dollars worth of servers and other computer equipment. CyrusOne said the new Austin data center would employ 10 to 15 people in its first year. The MetCenter is a 550-acre business park that includes data and call centers, office and industrial space. The park also includes six hotels, a Waffle House, Denny's, Starbucks, hike-and-bike trails and a sports complex with tennis and basketball courts. A disc golf course is planned.
