CYRUSONE DELIVERS
UNINTERRUPTED SERVICE DURING HURRICANE RITA
CyrusOne Implements Emergency
Management & Response Plan for Hurricane
Rita and Reports 100% Uptime
Houston, TX (September
27, 2005) — CyrusOne initiated its
Emergency Management & Response Plan
for Hurricane Rita on September 17th, 2005
when the National Oceanic & Atmospheric
Administration first announced that a low
pressure system was expected to move into
the Gulf of Mexico and become a full-blown
hurricane.
Throughout the week
of September 19th, the CyrusOne Emergency
Management Team monitored all severe weather
threats from its emergency management command
center in Houston, TX and worked with both
customers and non-customers to implement
their disaster recovery and business continuity
plans.
When CyrusOne implements
its emergency management plan, it ensures
six important areas are addressed before
disaster strikes:
1. Health &
Safety – The health and safety
of our customers and staff is CyrusOne’s
first priority. We work with customers to
ensure their disaster plans are in place
and activated. All customer temporary office
space was secured and physically monitored
throughout the storm.
2. People
– CyrusOne ensures that it has proper
availability of staff. More than 40% of
the CyrusOne staff were on-site and running
operations 24/7 throughout the storm, ensuring
100% uptime. Communications and preparation
guides were distributed to all on-site visitors
and employees.
3. Facility
– CyrusOne guarantees a secure facility,
even in extreme conditions such as a hurricane.
Both logical and physical security of the
facility was fully monitored and managed
24/7. Five zones were established in the
facility and the physical integrity of each
zone was monitored every fifteen minutes.
4. Operations
- All mechanical, electrical and fueling
processes are reviewed and activated during
an Emergency Management Response. Uninterruptible
power and cooling systems, including generator
support and redundant HVAC systems, were
100% available throughout Hurricane Rita.
Generators and fuel tanks were “topped”
off and contracts with fuel carriers were
secured. All systems remained on-line throughout
the hurricane without interruption.
5. Communications
- CyrusOne initiated its Emergency Management
& Response Plan for Hurricane Rita on
September 17th, 2005. The Emergency Management
& Response Team was immediately mobilized
and the plan was activated. Once Hurricane
Rita became a threat to the Texas coast,
customer disaster recovery plans were reviewed
and communication protocols were initiated
and operational.
6. System and
Network Management – CyrusOne’s
Managed Services teams quickly began working
with customers on the September 20th to
activate procedures to enhance their abilities
to maintain 100% system and network availability
during the storm. A few of the changes included
DNS changes, email re-routing, backup tape
logistics, router management changes, etc.
The result was that all system and network
monitoring and managed customers experienced
no downtime as a result of this storm.
"CyrusOne is committed
to ensuring the availability, security and
integrity of business-critical data and
applications 24 hours a day, 7 days a week,"
said David Ferdman, president & CEO
for CyrusOne. "And I’m very pleased
with the dedication, professionalism and
execution our team demonstrated during the
hurricane Rita response".
David Langston, CIO
at Houston-based Allied Home Mortgage Capital
Corp., who uses CyrusOne’s data center
services for business continuity, said “CyrusOne
was thoroughly planned for this event. Their
expertise and professionalism demonstrated
during hurricane Rita made us feel at ease.
They did a great job and kept our systems
available throughout the storm.”
CyrusOne experienced
no service interruption to either internal
or customer systems. The Emergency Management
& Response Plan for Hurricane Rita was
executed as planned and operations remained
in a “business-as-usual” state
for all data center, systems and network
management, and remote monitoring customers.
