DALLAS – CyrusOne, leading global data center developer and operating, specializing in delivering state-of-the-art digital infrastructure solutions, reached a significant construction milestone today as the final steel beam was raised into place during a traditional "topping out" ceremony at its newest state-of-the-art data center in Wood Dale, IL. This ceremonial moment, marking the completion of the structural framework, represents a key achievement in the development of critical digital infrastructure supporting the growing technology demands of the Chicago region.
In construction tradition, a topping out ceremony commemorates the placement of the final structural beam, often adorned with an evergreen tree and American flag to symbolize growth, good luck, and pride. The event brought together numerous design and construction trade partners, including members from AG&E Structural Engenuity, Bowman Consulting Group, Corgan, KW Mission Critical Engineering, MGAC, Riley Construction Company, ERM, TLD Design Consulting, Pinnacle Engineering Group, Transwestern Development Group, and Ironworkers Local Union One.
"This data center complex is designed to meet customer growth demands, and we are proud to celebrate this milestone with our team and partners," said Eric Schwartz, Chief Executive Officer at CyrusOne. "We are deeply appreciative of all our partners, and I am very proud of the accomplishments we have made together."
“On behalf of the City, we are excited to have a project of this magnitude in Wood Dale,” said Wood Dale Mayor Pulice. “We warmly welcome CyrusOne to Wood Dale and look forward to becoming longtime community partners.”
When completed, the campus will include two buildings totaling more than 500,000 square feet, delivering an initial IT capacity of 18 megawatts with scalable capacity to meet future growth needs. The project represents a significant economic investment in Wood Dale, generating hundreds of construction jobs and permanent, high-skilled technical positions, upon completion.
"We've been building with CyrusOne since 2013, and it's always an honor to hit milestones like this together," said Dave Sitkowski, Managing Director at Clune Construction. "There's a deep level of trust in this partnership, and it shows in how our teams work together. From our incredible trade partners to the Clune folks in the field, everyone's pushing hard to deliver with speed, safety, and pride."
Designed with sustainability at its core, the campus is intended to be LEED certified, helping reduce overall environmental impact through sophisticated control systems for mechanical and electrical systems that optimize operational efficiency. The facility will incorporate drought-resistant landscaping, and renewable energy components to minimize carbon footprint.
"ComEd's reliable and resilient power helps position northern Illinois as one of the best locations for data centers in the country," said Melissa Washington, Senior Vice President of Customer Operations and Strategic Initiatives at ComEd. "The new CyrusOne facility in Wood Dale is bringing advanced data storage technology, increased local investment and more high-paying jobs to the area as they support our data-driven future. We look forward to delivering the infrastructure necessary to support continued CyrusOne operations in Illinois."
Notable attendees included U.S. Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi, Wood Dale Mayor Nunzio Pulice, Illinois State Senator Seth Lewis, State Representative Jennifer Sanalitro, Clune CEO David Hall, Melissa Washington, SVP of Customer Operations at ComEd, and other Wood Dale community leaders.
CyrusOne has maintained a presence in Illinois since 2016 and currently operates a nearby campus with three data center buildings, supporting large multi-megawatt deployments of critical infrastructure for major enterprises.
