The release of CyrusOne’s 2025 Sustainability Report highlights the meaningful progress the company has made to keep pace with the convergence of technological advancements, critical environmental concerns, and shifting market demands of the global data center industry. Through our collaborative team approach and sustainability-oriented mindset, we’ve managed the increasing AI-driven demand for capacity while delivering tailored and integrated solutions for customers and reducing our environmental impacts. Most notably, despite more than 70% growth in our business since 2021, our carbon emissions decreased by 29.4% during this time, exceeding our 2024 annual SBTi reduction milestone by more than 16 percentage points.
Covering Environmental, Social and Governance topics, this year’s report dives into our energy efficiency metrics and strategies and progress toward key targets in carbon emission reduction, water usage, and biodiversity, while highlighting our achievements and examples of company innovation.
As we grow, so does our responsibility to our communities, people, partners, and the environment. We're taking bold steps to ensure that every milestone in our success also moves the needle on sustainability. Some notable examples of how we’ve balanced our business growth and commitment to sustainability include:
Governance & Leadership
- CyrusOne marked its entry into the Japanese market with our first data center groundbreaking, through a joint venture (CyrusOneKEP) with Kansai Electric Power Co., Inc. (KEPCO).
- As a result of our strong sustainability record and progress toward our science-based carbon target, in 2024 we secured $11.2 billion in sustainability-linked financing to fund data center growth – effectively aligning our growth with sustainability strategies.
- For the 3rd year running, CyrusOne was ranked as ‘Gold’ level by EcoVadis, placing us in the top 5% of rated companies.
Environment
- At the backbone of our sustainability strategy is the philosophy of building data centers which are sustainable from the start. Accordingly, we have committed to achieve BREEAM or LEED certification at all new standard build data centers, and in 2024, we received BREEAM Very Good certifications at two of our London data centers, named LON4 and LON5.
- We also continue to strive for excellence at existing facilities – in 2024, 15 of our U.S. data centers achieved GBI’s Green Globes® certifications and we received our first TRUE (Total Resource Use and Efficiency) certification at our San Antonio SAT5 facility.
- Several of our sustainability initiatives—including cooling optimization, our net positive water program, and sustainable procurement initiatives—were recognized by organizations such as Energy+Environment Leader, receiving multiple sustainability awards.
Relationships
- Tied into CyrusOne’s business growth is our expanding supply chain. Since supply chain emissions make up 53% of our total greenhouse gas emissions, integrating sustainability has been a key priority in 2024. This resulted in our pilot sustainability supply chain project receiving recognition from the Business Intelligence Group (BIG).
- Throughout 2024, we continued our ongoing investment in community initiatives through the release of our independent research report ‘Listening to Communities’, hosting Open Data Center Days at our Frankfurt sites, and participating in the Rising Star Programme’s Roadshow in London, among others.
- As a direct result of positive employee feedback, CyrusOne was named a Top Workplace by Dallas Morning News and USA Today, and a certified Great Place to Work® in the UK.
